The Aquaponic Greenhouse (under construction) is designed to grow healthy produce for the local market year-round.
We envision an urban landscape dotted with like greenhouses that supply the fresh produce needs of all Missoulians.
How can we accomplish this? The first step is to show that urban farming in a strict sense works economically. We will do this with high planting densities using a combination of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (no soil farming) inside a thoroughly insulated Chinese-style greenhouse. The humongous mass of the water in the system (15,000 pounds!) acts as a thermal battery to stay cool when it's hot outside and warm when it's cold outside.
Our belief is that this space- and energy-efficient urban food production system, if profitable, should be replicated and improved upon by social and agricultural entrepreneurs eager to earn a living by solving a problem.
